Is running a business for everyone?

At a time when the new generation increasingly emphasizes and values independence as an individual, an increasing percentage of people decide to start their own business. Undoubtedly, running a business has not only benefits but also certain risks. Businessman’s Day, a relatively new holiday, which is celebrated every year in order to honor, present the figure of a businessman and his role on the market closer to the community.

Who is a businessman?

For a significant number of people, defining themselves as a businessman might be problematic, due to a lack of understanding of this term. An entrepreneur may think that his or her brand isn’t  recognizable enough or has a short period of existence in order to be called so. The situation seems to simplify when one looks at the English origin of the word, then it is possible to assume that a businessman is a person conducting business interests who holds a high position in a company or is the owner of own business.

It is said that anyone can become a businessman, but iis it worth considering whether everyone should? In order to start one’s own business, it is not enough to only have great ambitions or a business plan, but also several important features that will be useful in the later stages of running a business.

They undoubtedly include:

  • Perseverance in pursuing the goal despite possible obstacles or failures;
  • Creativity and unconventional thinking that will help one stand out from other companies;
  • Flexibility that will allow one to quickly adapt to changing circumstances and market situations;
  • Negotiation skills and giving instructions, which will be useful at a later stage during conversations with employees.

However, despite the commitment and possession of the above-mentioned features, businessmen, both those who are starting their own business and those with extensive experience on the market, have some concerns connected with holding their positions.

Fear of failure

Starting a business, even despite a perfect idea and plan, often involves some risk as to how the business will fare on the market. No one can predict what the dynamically changing market will bring and prepare for possible complications well in advance. In order to make reasonable decisions, it is worth conducting an in-depth analysis of a given project, which in addition to the possibilities, will also include the balance of losses. Protecting yourself in this way will allow one to prepare mentally and physically for a situation in which something does not go according to plan.

To prevent errors or shortcomings that may arise, it is worth expanding one’s knowledge in the field of law and taxes. Therefore, it is so important to assemble a competent team that will be able to advise on the above issues.

Vacation and business

Running one’s own business undoubtedly has a dramatic impact on the entire life of every businessman, for whom work is no longer counted from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., but also in the evenings and weekends. The head of a given company has to control the stage of started projects, make important decisions, or even sign the necessary documents.

Moreover, the same situation appears when it comes to planning a holiday. During a trip or day-off, the company owner has to remain in constant contact with the employees delegated to replace him/her during time of absence. This might be extremely burdensome and takes away the joy of leisure time, which despite that might be difficult to organize when running a business. Therefore, businessmen often do not decide to go on holiday at all, mainly because they assume in advance that they will not be able to rest anyway.

Costs of running a business

According to statistics, every third Polish entrepreneur also expresses their concerns about the increasing costs of running a company, regardless of its size. One of the most important topics here is the constantly increasing level of ZUS contributions in Poland. Unfortunately, this is an expense that a businessman cannot avoid or reduce in any way in order to save money. That is why this is a particularly problematic issue in the case of small companies that have fewer resources.

Other disturbing fees concern the costs of electricity, raw materials which are necessary to provide given services and the increase in wages in the country. Often, despite the obvious need of hiring more staff to fulfill orders on time, employers cannot afford another employee because they do not have enough money.

The above-mentioned fears are real thoughts accompanying both current and future businessman who are just considering opening a company. Independent management undoubtedly provides a greater freedom of action and the feeling that one can make significant decisions regarding own work, select team members and the appearance of the final product. However, it is worth being aware of what being a businessman involves, what sacrifices one will have to make, what one need to watch out for and who to cooperate with.
